In the mid 1990’s Richard headed the Graphic Artists Guild’s Cartoonist Alliance, (a national organization representing professional artists and ethical issues.) Richard also illustrates for many major children’s publishers and performs the unusual task of “ghost illustrator” for master illustrator John Steven Gurney on Scholastic’s “ Bailey City Kids” , “Bailey City Monsters” and Random Houses’ “A to Z Mysteries Series”. Richard’s work has also received many awards such as “ The New England Center for Creative Endeavors Award of Distinction” and several Optima Design Awards for Illustration.
Richard is also the creator of “Urban Fossils” which are hand-sculpted images that are carved into the faces of bricks. The bricks were created in New York’s SOHO district back in 1989. The original bricks featured New York City landmarks and sold in many galleries and gift shops. They received much acclaim, appearing in many magazines and newspapers. Special edition “Urban Fossils” were presented to Broadway stage actors upon leaving their stage runs so they can take a little piece of New York home with them. Today, Richard creates his “Urban Fossils” out of his Connecticut Studio and sells them through various venues such as local craft fairs and The Connecticut Store in Waterbury.
